We have enjoyed having the VBS Team here from Iowa.   They have been a wonderful blessing to our church and our community.

Christian Living Today

I like to write. I like to interact with others – sharing my life with them and learning from them as well. I love my Lord.

For some time now, I have been playing with an idea for putting the two together in a way that makes sense and can be edifying to both myself and my readers. This is the result. Please feel free to join in – share your thoughts. Of course everyone won’t agree with me. That is okay. This blog is not about me. It is about Christians sharing with each other what it takes to live as Christians in the here and now. It is about applying Scripture to everyday life. It is about sharing the truths of God’s Word in ways which will inspire, admonish, and encourage.

Having read through several of the post I found I was inspired, admonished and encouraged.

Does God Deal With Pride?

During our study on Romans, we spent a great deal of time in Romans 1 talking about what is revealed about God in His creation and the responsibility of mankind towards what it reveals.

I came across this quote from the second century by Theophilus A.D.115-181

CHAPTER VI.—GOD IS KNOWN BY HIS WORKS.
Consider, O man, His works,—the timely rotation of the seasons, and the changes of temperature; the regular march of the stars; the well-ordered course of days and nights, and months, and years; the various beauty of seeds, and plants, and fruits; and the divers species of quadrupeds, and birds, and reptiles, and fishes, both of the rivers and of the sea; or consider the instinct implanted in these animals to beget and rear offspring, not for their own profit, but for the use of man; and the providence with which God provides nourishment for all flesh, or the subjection in which He has ordained that all things subserve mankind. Consider, too, the flowing of sweet fountains and never-failing rivers, and the seasonable supply of dews, and showers, and rains; the manifold movement of the heavenly bodies, the morning star rising and heralding the approach of the perfect luminary; and the constellation of Pleiades, and Orion, and Arcturus, and the orbit of the other stars that circle through the heavens, all of which the manifold wisdom of God has called by names of their own. He is God alone who made light out of darkness, and brought forth light from His treasures, and formed the chambers of the south wind, and the treasure-houses of the deep, and the bounds of the seas, and the treasuries of snows and hail-storms, collecting the waters in the storehouses of the deep, and the darkness in His treasures, and bringing forth the sweet, and desirable, and pleasant light out of His treasures; “who causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth: He maketh lightnings for the rain;” who sends forth His thunder to terrify, and foretells by the lightning the peal of the thunder, that no soul may faint with the sudden shock; and who so moderates the violence of the lightning as it flashes out of heaven, that it does not consume the earth; for, if the lightning were allowed all its power, it would burn up the earth; and were the thunder allowed all its power, it would overthrow all the works that are therein.

CHAPTER VII.—WE SHALL SEE GOD WHEN WE PUT ON IMMORTALITY.
This is my God, the Lord of all, who alone stretched out the heaven, and established the breadth
of the earth under it; who stirs the deep recesses of the sea, and makes its waves roar; who rules its power, and stills the tumult of its waves; who founded the earth upon the waters, and gave a spirit to nourish it; whose breath giveth light to the whole, who, if He withdraw His breath, the whole will utterly fail. By Him you speak, O man; His breath you breathe yet Him you know not. And this is your condition, because of the blindness of your soul, and the hardness of your heart. But, if you will, you may be healed. Entrust yourself to the Physician, and He will couch the eyes of your soul and of your heart. Who is the Physician? God, who heals and makes alive through His word and wisdom. God by His own word and wisdom made all things; for “by His word were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.” Most excellent is His wisdom. By His wisdom God founded the earth; and by knowledge He prepared the heavens; and by understanding were the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the clouds poured out their dews. If thou perceivest these things, O man, living chastely, and holily, and righteously, thou canst see God. But before all let faith and the fear of God have rule in thy heart, and then shalt thou understand these things.

We have been going through the book of James for the last few months and are now finishing James Chapter 3. I came across this video from DG and found it a great illustration for what James is saying. We showed this during our afternoon service this past Sunday.

James 3:10  Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Several Sundays ago, Ellis mentioned going to find a cemetery he had heard about near Drummond. Ellis is the mayor of Drummond Idaho.

Neither of us knew the name of the cemetery nor the exact location, but we decided to try to find it. After a short search, we found it off of Old Hog Hallow Road. The road to the cemetery had long been plowed under, and the cemetery itself, sits on top of a hill, surrounded by plowed under grain fields, overlooking the valley. The cemetery turned out to be Farnum Cemetery with only a handful of gravestones dating from 1906 – 1950’s and looks to not have been maintained for many years.

One message on a gravestone caught our eye. It was from a woman born in 1842 and died in the early 1900’s.

Remember me

as you pass by.

As you are now

so once was I.

As I am now

so you may be.

Prepare for death

and follow me.

This saying was a common poem placed of grave stones throughout the old west. It is a sober reminder of

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

I also thought it was interesting that all of the other times I have seen this poem on grave stones it has read “As I am now so you must (or shall) be” rather than “As I am now so you may be“. I can’t help but wonder if this change is a reference to…

1 Thessalonians 4:14-17 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Either way it is a timely reminder of eternity and the reality that we must all face.
